Heat pumps, geothermal, straight answers.
The questions Rochester homeowners actually ask before hiring an HVAC contractor. If yours isn't here, send it over.
- Do cold-climate heat pumps actually work in Rochester winters?
- Yes — that is exactly what they are designed for. Modern cold-climate models from Mitsubishi, Rheem, Gree, and Samsung maintain rated capacity down to about 5°F and continue heating into the negatives. In Rochester we typically pair the heat pump with a small backup heat source (electric resistance strip or an existing gas furnace) for the handful of nights each winter that drop below the heat pump's economic balance point. The combination heats more efficiently year-round than a traditional furnace alone.
- How much does a heat pump or geothermal system cost to install?
- It depends on the home's ductwork, electrical service, and the system size you need. As rough ranges for Rochester homes: a cold-climate air-source heat pump retrofit usually runs $8,000–$18,000 before incentives. A new geothermal system (drilling + heat pump + interior work) typically runs $25,000–$45,000 before incentives. Every quote is fixed and itemized — no hourly add-ons. Free onsite estimates.
- What incentives and tax credits are available?
- A lot. The federal IRA tax credit covers 30% of geothermal installation costs with no cap (Inflation Reduction Act, through 2032), and the federal heat pump credit covers up to $2,000/year. NYSERDA Clean Heat rebates stack on top — historically $1,000–$3,000+ per heat pump installed by a participating contractor. NY State also has utility rebates through RG&E. We walk through which credits apply to your specific install during the estimate and provide the paperwork.
- Do you offer financing?
- Yes — we work with financing partners that handle most HVAC installs (with credit approval). For geothermal in particular, the federal 30% tax credit often makes financing the smaller upfront amount very straightforward. Bring the question to the estimate visit and we will walk through the options that fit your situation.
- Do you provide 24/7 emergency service?
- Yes. The emergency line targets a 30-minute callback any hour, any day, including holidays. For no-heat calls in winter we prioritize same-day service. Office hours for non-emergency calls are Monday through Friday, 7 am to 4 pm.
- What areas do you serve?
- Monroe County and the immediately surrounding towns — Rochester, Greece, Webster, Penfield, Pittsford, Fairport, Victor, Henrietta, Brighton, Honeoye Falls, Canandaigua, Spencerport, Hilton, Chili, Ogden, Mendon, Rush, Wheatland, and Scottsville. If you are within roughly 25 miles of Rochester, you are almost certainly in our service area. Outside that, ask — we sometimes travel for larger geothermal projects.
- How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?
- Once a year for a single system, twice a year if you run both heating and cooling heavily (i.e. spring tune-up for the AC or heat pump cooling side, fall tune-up for the heating side). Annual maintenance is the single biggest factor in equipment lifespan and warranty compliance — most manufacturer warranties require documented yearly service to remain valid.
- Can you service equipment another company installed?
- Yes — we service and repair heat pumps, geothermal systems, furnaces, and air handlers from any major brand, regardless of who installed them. The owner has worked on every common brand at some point in 15+ years in the trade.
- What certifications and licenses does 4th Gen Mechanical hold?
- New York State HVAC contractor license, EPA Section 608 universal refrigerant certification, and manufacturer training across Mitsubishi, Rheem, Gree, and Samsung. The business is registered with the New York Department of State as 4th Gen Mechanical, LLC (formed December 2023). We carry general liability insurance and provide a certificate on request.
- How long does an install take?
- A standard air-source heat pump retrofit is a one- to two-day job. A geothermal install with drilling typically runs three to five working days depending on weather, soil, and how the loop ties into the home. Service calls and repairs are usually same-day. We take one install job at a time, so you are not waiting behind other crews mid-project.
- Why "4th Gen"?
- The name refers to Treven, the owner, who is a fourth-generation HVAC technician — four generations of heating and cooling work in the family, carried into a new Rochester company. The business itself is new (registered December 2023), but the expertise behind it is not.
